Scope
Wayfinding strategy for the historic house · Engraved bronze directional and identification plaques · Named room directories · Bedroom range directionals · Manufacture and installation

Engraved bronze set against panelled doors, silk wallcovering and rubble stone. In a protected historic interior the wayfinding problem is not legibility, it is restraint: enough sign to be found, little enough that the room is still the thing you look at.

Setting

Carton House is a Georgian house in Maynooth that now works as a hotel. The interiors are the product: the plasterwork, the joinery, the silk on the walls. Any sign in a room like that is an intrusion by definition, so the only question worth asking is how small an intrusion will still do the job.

Named, not numbered

The reception rooms carry their own names rather than numbers. The Rose Room, the Ballroom, the Fisher Room, the Autumn Suite, the Winter Suite, the Gilbey Room, the Lennox Room, the Ashford Room. A directory lists them in a single engraved column, and the guest arriving for an event has been given a name on an invitation rather than a code. Even the bedrooms are approached that way: Lady Lennox, bedrooms 301 to 304, so a wing is found by its name and the room by its number.

Enough sign to be found. Little enough that the room is still the thing you look at.

Bronze, because the house is older than the hotel

Everything is engraved into bronze and finished dark, with the lettering in serif capitals and generous spacing. Bronze ages rather than dates, and against limestone, rubble stone or a panelled door it reads as something the house acquired rather than something a brand applied. The plaques are small and set at the doorcase, beside the architrave rather than across it, so the joinery line is never broken.

Restraint is the specification

There are no illuminated signs, no projecting flags and no panels mounted over historic fabric. Directionals sit above doorways where a lintel already provides a horizontal, and corridor directories hang as single flat plates. In a protected interior the discipline is subtractive: every sign that is not strictly needed to find a room has been left out, and the ones that remain are the smallest size that still works at walking pace.
