St Angela's College was founded by the Ursuline order in 1952, on the shore of Lough Gill outside Sligo. It became a college of Atlantic Technological University on 1 November 2023, eighteen months after ATU itself was formed from three institutes of technology. The external signage followed, drawn through the winter of 2024 and into 2025.
A family of types, not a set of signs
The external pack runs to 33 drawings and eight sign-type families: entrance signs, pedestrian orientation totems and vinyls, pedestrian directional fingerposts, vehicle directional totems, site identification signs, external branded lettering and car park identification. Each type is drawn once and then placed, which is how a campus ends up looking like one decision instead of thirty. The materials are set out at the same level of detail: 2 and 3 mm aluminium, stove enamelled to a 15 per cent gloss in Pantone 328U, matte white vinyl lettering, and the ATU pattern either laser cut from the panel face or printed into it. Fingerposts are 3,500 mm poles with 850 mm below ground in a 1,000 × 400 × 400 mm concrete foundation. Revisions ran from December 2024 to March 2025; the installed signs were photographed in May 2026.
The campus kept its own name. It did not keep its own sign system.
The names the buildings already had
ATU is a public body, so the Irish comes first by law, at equal size and prominence. At the campus entrance that reads San Aingeal above St Angelas, under the ATU mark. On the orientation board it goes further: Áras Naomh Ursula above St Ursula's House, Teach an Chóiste above Coach House, Foirgneamh Eolaíochta above Science Building, Seomraí Teagaisc above Teaching Rooms, Páirceáil above Parking. Where a building has only an Irish name, as with Áras Malachy, Áras Bhríde and Brí Mhuire, the line stands on its own rather than being given an English equivalent it never had. The board is glazed and held in a stainless steel frame, with the map above and the numbered key below, so the campus and its index are read in one movement.
