NHS Wales Identity
NHS Corporate Identity Brand Guidelines (NHS Wales) and Publication Notice 20/01.
The NHS Wales corporate identity guidelines set how health boards and trusts in Wales apply the NHS in Wales logo, colours and fonts, including on signage. With NWSSP's Publication Notice 20/01 they require NHS Wales signs to be bilingual in Welsh and English.
For signage and wayfinding
What it asks of your signs
- 01Every NHS Wales sign in a public area, and in internal operational areas staff use, must be in Welsh and English, permanent or temporary. That comes from the Welsh Language Standards and is restated for estates teams in Publication Notice 20/01.
- 02The main site sign carries the health board logo prominently on a white background, with the board's disclosure text in small type at the foot of the panel. Other signs on the same posts sit below the main sign.
- 03The NHS in Wales logo always sits to the left of the health board title and the two are never separated.
- 04The guidelines recommend the Frutiger family for designers. Logo colours are Pantone 534 blue and Pantone 465 gold, or 534 alone for single colour.
- 05The sample signs set Welsh above English. Follow the health board's own compliance notice for the exact placement rules.
- 06Ask the health board's brand guardian for current artwork. Welsh Government's asset library holds a bilingual NHS Wales logo guideline released in July 2023.
What it is
When the NHS in Wales was reorganised into local health boards, a common corporate identity was introduced so the boards read as one family. The brand guidelines, amended in September 2015 and still published by NHS Wales bodies such as Health Education and Improvement Wales, cover logo use for health boards and trusts, the NHS in Wales logo on its own and alongside the Welsh Government identity, fonts, colours, stationery, websites and a page of sample signage.
The guidelines are short on signage detail: one page showing a site entrance sign and post-mounted directional panels, all bilingual. Each health board then applies the identity through its own brand guardian and sign specification.
Publication Notice 20/01 and the Welsh Language Standards
NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership Specialist Estates Services issued Publication Notice 20/01 on 9 January 2020 to chief executives and estates managers of health boards and trusts. It updated the Welsh status note for Wayfinding, the 2005 NHS Estates guidance, to reflect the Welsh Language Standards, and states that signage in public or internal operational areas where staff have access must be in Welsh and English at all times, whether permanent or temporary.
Each health board has its own compliance notice from the Welsh Language Commissioner. Ask for it at briefing: it settles questions such as whether Welsh must be positioned to be read first, and those duties override any sample layout in the brand guidelines.
How it compares with Ireland and the rest of the UK
The closest match is the HSE Signage Manual in Ireland, where the Official Languages Acts make Irish compulsory and put it first. The structure is similar: a national language law, a health-service identity and a wayfinding method. NHS Scotland treats Gaelic as optional at Board level, and NHS England has no second-language duty.
Common mistakes
- Adding Welsh as a smaller or lighter line after the English artwork is approved.
- Leaving temporary and construction-phase signs English only.
- Using machine translation. Have Welsh text translated professionally and proofread before manufacture.
- Separating the NHS in Wales logo from the health board name.
Editions and history
The corporate identity was introduced with the health board reorganisation and the guidelines were amended in September 2015. Publication Notice 20/01 (9 January 2020) updated the Wayfinding status note for the Welsh Language Standards. A bilingual NHS Wales logo guideline was added to the Welsh Government asset library in July 2023.
