S.I. 433/2025
Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Regulations 2025 (S.I. No. 433 of 2025).
The Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Regulations 2025 prescribe Ireland's regulatory traffic signs, road markings, traffic signals and pedestrian crossings. They replaced the 2024 Regulations, which had in turn revoked the long-standing Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 1997.

What it asks of your signs
- 01If your car park, estate road or campus road in Ireland uses stop, yield, no entry, speed limit or parking restriction signs or markings, their designs and dimensions come from these Regulations.
- 02The 1997 Regulations (S.I. 181/1997) are revoked. Specifications that still cite them are out of date.
- 03Copy the prescribed designs from the schedules and the Department's working drawings; never redraw them.
- 04The Yield sign has an alternative Irish-language version with the same dimensions as the English version.
- 05Warning and information signs, and directional signs, are covered in the Traffic Signs Manual, which carries the force of a Ministerial direction to road authorities.
What it covers
The 2025 Regulations were made by the Minister for Transport on 22 September 2025 under sections 5, 95 and 96 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, and notice of their making was published in Iris Oifigiúil on 26 September 2025. They set out mandatory signs, prohibitory and restrictive signs, speed limit signs, lane control signs, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, roadway markings (including disabled persons' parking bays, loading bays, pay parking areas and EV charging bays), tram signals, and portable Garda signs, with the designs and dimensions in seven schedules.
The Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) (Amendment) Regulations 2026 (S.I. No. 205 of 2026) amended them to provide for bus priority facilities on hard shoulders of national roads. The two are cited together as the Road Traffic (Traffic Signs) Regulations 2025 to 2026.
From 1997 to 2025
For more than 25 years the reference was the Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 1997 (S.I. No. 181 of 1997) and its many amendments. The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 2024 (S.I. No. 200 of 2024) consolidated and revoked the 1997 Regulations and thirteen amending and related instruments. The 2024 Regulations and the Road Traffic (Signs) (Speed limits) Regulations 2024 (S.I. No. 618 of 2024) were then revoked by the 2025 Regulations. If a tender, planning condition or specification still names S.I. 181/1997, raise it and work to the current instrument.
How it relates to the UK
The Irish system differs from Great Britain and Northern Ireland in sign design, speed units, colours and language. In the UK the equivalent instruments are TSRGD 2016 for Great Britain and the Traffic Signs Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997. A cross-border client should expect separate artwork sets for each jurisdiction, even for the same message.
