ISO 21542:2021

Building construction. Accessibility and usability of the built environment.

ISO 21542:2021 is the international standard for accessibility and usability of buildings. It sets requirements and recommendations for getting to, into, around and out of a building, including evacuation, and is the global reference behind much national access guidance.

For signage and wayfinding

What it asks of your signs

  • 01Useful on international projects, or where a client's global design standards are written around ISO rather than BS or I.S. documents.
  • 02Covers movement through and out of buildings, including evacuation, so wayfinding and escape signage both fall within its reach.
  • 03Includes common areas of multi-unit residential buildings and the outdoor features that link a building to its site.
  • 04Recognises that full accessibility can be hard in existing buildings, which is relevant when you are retrofitting signs into heritage or constrained fabric.
  • 05In the UK and Ireland, treat it as background. The local benchmarks are BS 8300-2, TGD M and I.S. EN 17210.

Scope

ISO 21542 sets requirements and recommendations for the building elements that affect accessibility and usability: access to buildings, movement within them, egress in normal conditions, and evacuation in a fire. It also covers the common areas of multi-unit residential buildings and the outdoor features that connect a building to its site. It applies to new buildings and to new work in existing buildings.

The 2021 edition introduced exceptional considerations for existing buildings where full accessibility is very difficult to achieve. It is written mainly around adults with disabilities, with some guidance for children.

How it relates to the UK and Irish documents

No UK or Irish regulation points to ISO 21542 directly. Its influence is indirect: the European standard EN 17210 was drafted mainly from the 2011 edition, and much of its content overlaps with BS 8300. If a multinational client asks for ISO 21542 compliance, map it against BS 8300-2 or I.S. EN 17210 and the local technical guidance rather than designing to it in isolation, because the building control body will assess against the local documents.

Status

ISO lists the 2021 edition as published and current. It replaced ISO 21542:2011, now withdrawn. ISO began a routine systematic review in April 2026, which closed in September 2026; the outcome had not been announced when we checked. Look at the ISO page before relying on the edition for a long programme.
